When Alchemy Meets Coffee: How to Brew like a Scientist

There's nothing quite like the spectacle that a coffee syphon provides with no other coffee makers coming close. You thought you'd mastered the art of brewing, well think again! This is the perfect coffee maker for someone wanting to test their brewing skills and take their coffee setup to the next level. Oh! And we think it looks great too!

Made from heat-proof Borosilicate glass the Hario Technica Coffee Syphon can make anywhere between 2-5 cups of coffee depending on its size. With any coffee brewer getting the perfect brew is a result of multiple practices and the Vacuum Method is no different, if anything it requires amore attentive eye. If you're willing to put the time and effort into controlling the different variables then the various different mouthfeels, balances and flavours possible are endless.

A short guide to brewing with a Vacuum/Syphon Coffee Maker

  1. A candle is placed underneath the lower chamber which is filled with pre-heated water.
  2. Once the water is boiling you seal the top chamber and wait for this to boil.
  3. Now that your top chamber is boiling you wait until the bubbles reduce. At this point you are ready to begin your brew.
  4. Add the desired amount of coffee and stir it until all the coffee is saturated and completely wet.
  5. Roughly after 30 seconds a small crust appears on the surface. Stir this and wait another 30 seconds and then remove the heat source.
  6. Now this is the exciting bit! A vacuum will begin to be created and the coffee will begin to be drawn down into the lower chamber.
  7. If done correctly you should be left with the coffee grounds in the top chamber and a freshly brewed coffee in the bottom.
